Photovoltaics

Solar electricity for homes, businesses and isolated sites. Every system starts with demand and site conditions, to select capacity, components and how the energy will be used.

01

How a photovoltaic system works

Modules convert sunlight into direct-current electricity. An inverter converts it into alternating current for the building’s loads. Mounting structures, cables, protection devices and controls complete the system. Component selection must consider the whole installation and its operating conditions.

02

Grid connection and self-consumption

In a grid-connected system, generated electricity can be used as it is produced; surplus energy can be exported under the applicable arrangements. When production does not meet demand, the building draws from the grid. Understanding consumption hours helps size the system and make better use of solar electricity on site.

03

Storage and backup power

Batteries retain some energy for use at another time, for example in the evening. Capacity, power and control strategy depend on the consumption profile. Supplying loads during a grid outage requires a dedicated configuration with compatible inverters and circuits. Having a battery alone does not guarantee backup operation.

04

Independent systems and remote applications

Stand-alone systems supply loads without a grid connection. Sizing considers daily consumption, peak demand, seasonal sunlight and required autonomy. A supporting energy source may also be assessed where continuity is important. Applications include:

  • Buildings and facilities in remote locations.
  • Solar lighting and streetlights.
  • Water pumping and agricultural loads.
  • Refrigeration and other dedicated electrical equipment.
05

Roofs, shading and available space

Orientation and tilt affect production, alongside shading, temperature and module characteristics. Before installation, assessment covers roof condition, load-bearing capacity, access for maintenance and cable routes. Projects involving roof refurbishment can be coordinated with specialist partner companies.

06

From feasibility to installation

The process connects the client’s objectives, site conditions and technical solution. Key information includes:

  • Electricity consumption and hourly profiles when available.
  • Drawings, photographs and dimensions of installation areas.
  • Loads to supply and expected changes in demand.
  • Details of the electricity supply and connection point.
  • Storage requirements or priority loads to be supplied.
07

Output, economics and operation

Expected output is assessed for the specific site, rather than from panel rated power alone. The economic assessment considers costs, self-consumption, operating conditions and maintenance. Monitoring helps detect faults and declining output; inspections and cleaning should reflect the environment and manufacturers’ instructions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How is a photovoltaic system sized for a home or business?

Sizing starts with annual electricity consumption in kWh from utility bills, hourly usage profiles, and roof orientation and shading. Residential systems often range between 3 and 6 kW, while heat pumps, electric vehicles, or commercial loads require tailored higher capacities.

When does battery storage make sense?

Battery storage increases self-consumption by storing daytime solar electricity for evening and nighttime use. If backup power during grid outages is required, a dedicated inverter and backup circuit configuration must be specified.

Are tax incentives available for photovoltaic systems in Italy in 2026?

Yes. For eligible residential installations in 2026, Italian tax deductions provide 50% recovery for primary residences and 36% for other residential properties over 10 years, up to a €96,000 expenditure cap.
