Biomass boilers and stoves

Heating and hot water using woody fuels, for homes, shared buildings and larger applications. Selection covers the boiler, thermal storage, heat distribution and fuel handling.

01

Logs, pellets and wood chips

Fuel choice affects operation, storage and the amount of handling required. The boiler must be compatible with the intended fuel type and quality.

  • Logs require storage space and an organised loading routine; moisture affects combustion.
  • Pellets allow automatic feeding configurations with suitable storage and transport equipment.
  • Wood chips require particular attention to quality, particle size, moisture and handling.
02

Boilers, air-heating stoves and hydro stoves

A biomass boiler transfers heat to the water in a heating system. An air-heating stove primarily heats the room in which it is installed, with ducting where supported by the model. A hydro stove connects to a water circuit. Selection considers the rooms to heat, the existing system, available space and fuel handling.

03

Applications and boiler sizing

Systems may serve individual homes, apartment buildings, hospitality facilities or larger loads. Capacity should reflect actual building demand and hot-water requirements. Correct sizing also considers operation at partial load and seasonal changes in demand.

04

Thermal storage and hydraulic circuits

A buffer tank can retain heat and help match production to demand. Whether it is required, and its volume, depend on boiler technology and the hydraulic arrangement. Design includes pumps, controls, protection devices and the return-water conditions specified by the manufacturer, as well as integration with the existing distribution system.

05

Fuel storage and supply

Before selecting a boiler, assessment covers fuel storage space, delivery arrangements and vehicle access. Storage should provide suitable conditions for preserving fuel and safe handling. Local availability, quality, delivery frequency and running costs contribute to the overall assessment.

06

Integration with solar thermal

Solar collectors can contribute to domestic hot water and reduce boiler operation when conditions are favourable. In winter, both sources are coordinated according to heat demand. Actual solar contribution depends on the site and system sizing; storage and controls are central to managing the heat sources.

07

Installation, maintenance and emissions

Assessment includes the plant room, ventilation, flue arrangements and requirements applicable at the installation site. Cleaning, ash removal and maintenance should be planned as part of routine operation. Fuel quality, combustion and boiler equipment affect efficiency and emissions and should be considered alongside heating performance.

08

Information for an initial assessment

Project planning needs information about the building and its current heating system, together with a practical assessment of day-to-day operation.

  • Floor area, insulation and existing energy consumption.
  • Distribution temperatures and hot-water demand.
  • Space for the boiler, buffer tank and fuel storage.
  • Access for deliveries, maintenance and flue arrangements.
  • Fuel preferences and willingness to manage the system.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an air pellet stove, a hydro stove, and a biomass boiler?

An air stove heats the room where it is installed; a hydro stove (termostufa) connects to radiators or underfloor heating circuits; a biomass boiler is installed in a plant room to supply heat and domestic hot water for the entire building.

How do I choose between logs, pellets, and wood chips?

Pellets offer automated operation and compact storage; logs provide low fuel cost where storage space and manual loading are practical; wood chips suit larger heating loads with dedicated storage and feed systems.

What regulations apply to biomass installations in Lombardy?

Lombardy sets environmental performance requirements (star ratings) based on municipality zone and altitude, alongside technical flue standards such as UNI 10683. We verify compliance before selecting any generator.
